nyc: what to do for labor day weekend

Three-day weekends seem to correlate with a mass exodus from NYC. And I get it...we're escaping too.  We are immersed in the day-to-day grind of life on these city streets and with so many nearby places to explore who wouldn't want to plan a little getaway? However, should you find yourself unable to leave the concrete jungle this holiday weekend, we’ve got you covered with some city centric adventures. Here are some of our favorite (and affordable) things to do in NYC for LDW:

1.     Soak up the sun.

We know.  We clearly have an obsession.  But really, what other way would you rather spend one of the last weekends of summer?  We’ve written before about how amazing the Rockaways are but since it’s a holiday we think you should put in the extra effort and make your way to Staten Island.  Yes, it will most likely require experiencing many of the various methods of MTA transit (subway/ferry/bus) but let’s just consider that part of the fun.  We recommend Franklin D. Roosevelt Beach for its miles of prime sunbathing opportunities and a pretty spectacular view of the Verrazano Bridge.  If looking for a quieter excursion, mosey a little bit farther down south to Great Kills Park.  You’ll have your choice of four different beaches with plenty of space to spread out.

2.     Play ball.

Spend some quality time out in Queens at the US Open.

3.     Go island hopping.

With its Hammock Park, sweeping views of lower Manhattan, and numerous art installations, Governor’s Island is the perfect place to spend some leisure time this holiday weekend.  Countless hours can be spent wandering around the various buildings and green spaces.  Who knows, maybe you’ll even stumble upon an art exhibit.  Word of advice – bring a hat and some sunscreen.  Your skin will thank me.

4.     Sail the seas.

Ok, so perhaps this one is more like booze and cruise but the intention is there.  The North River Lobster Company serves up food and drinks while sailing up and down the Hudson River.

5. Cheers to the End of Summer!

Not that it's really the end. You know we will drink every last drip of the sunshine that we can... but any excuse to drink rose, support a local female business owner, and enjoy the great outdoors we will raise a glass to. We've frequented some vineyards in the North Fork, and we recommend our favorite One Woman

Now, if you choose to binge some Netflix this weekend, we won't judge you either. Wish us luck in our own little 3 day adventure... let's just say it involves a canoe, tent, and probably a lobster or two.
